Codex is a coding agent built to understand codebases, build and test features, fix bugs, and review changes. The useful way to think about it is not as autocomplete, but as an engineering loop that combines reasoning, repository context, tools, and verification.
1. The task and context layer
Every run begins with an objective and its surrounding context: the conversation, repository files, project instructions, and any connected resources. Codex first orients itself—finding the relevant files, understanding constraints, and translating the request into concrete work.
2. The reasoning and planning layer
The model reasons about the desired outcome and chooses a sequence of actions. For larger work, that may include inspecting architecture, dividing work into stages, or coordinating parallel tasks. The plan is not the deliverable; it is a working map that adapts as new evidence appears.
3. The tool layer
Codex can use tools to read and edit files, run terminal commands, search documentation, inspect browser output, and interact with connected systems. Tools turn a language model response into an auditable workflow: each action produces evidence that can inform the next decision.
4. The execution environment
Code runs in a controlled local or cloud environment. Sandboxing and approval policies limit what the agent can access or change. Git worktrees and isolated cloud environments can keep concurrent work separated, while repository instructions help Codex follow the project’s conventions.
5. Verification and feedback
After making a change, Codex can compile the project, run tests, inspect output, review diffs, and fix failures. This feedback loop—observe, act, verify, refine—is what makes agentic coding different from generating a one-time code snippet.
6. The human review boundary
Codex is designed to produce reviewable work. Developers remain responsible for the goal, permissions, architectural judgment, and final acceptance. The strongest workflow pairs clear intent from a human with repeatable inspection and verification from the agent.
In practice, the architecture is a loop: understand the goal, gather context, reason about a solution, act through tools, verify the result, and report what changed. That pattern can scale from a small bug fix to a coordinated product build while keeping the work visible and controllable.
